Allow me to muse (and keep it quick) on the subject of the ego…
It’s rampant. It drives politicians to do horrible things, impares relationships and collaboration, etc. etc. Those are a bit out of my scope but…
It also causes physical injury!
More injuries happen in weightlifting because guys are trying to keep up with what others are doing. This happens in a lot of class environments especially, but also when we’re solo at the gymnasium 😩.
I don’t think I have to explain the psychology of this but I do think there’s something inherently in the male brain that leads us to a competitive nature. Nothing innately wrong with that but we have to be aware.
Here’s the vicious cycle:
EGO > TOO MUCH WEIGHT > INJURY > CAN’T WORKOUT FOR WEEKS > WEIGHT GAIN/LOSS OF STRENGTH AND OTHER REGRESSIONS > SADNESS
Not fun.
What you do is relative to you only. Your progress is yours.
Start light, especially if you haven’t done something in a while or especially if it’s your first time.
Gradually increase your weight/reps/exercise choice/intensity over time.
And here’s the formula to follow:
HUMILITY + CURIOSITY + EDUCATION x CONSISTENCY = SEXY GREATNESS!
We got this, men! Coach Z.
